Military Fatherhood Award on Facebook
Saturday, April 21, 2012, 11:19 PM
Via Marines.milMARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.? ? An office adorned with colorful finger paintings can speak volumes of the person who works there.
A ?daddy? necklace hangs on the wall, wooden shelves are stocked with parenting books and a Captain America motif sets a light-hearted mood in this office.
Most people would assume the office belonged to a proud parent. In this case, the assumption couldn?t be more accurate.
The National Fatherhood Initiative selected Navy Lt. Dennis Kelly, the chaplain of 1st Radio Battalion and 1st Intelligence Battalion, as one of three finalists for the Military Fatherhood Award. The NFI is an organization that aims to improve the well-being of children by promoting responsible fatherhood.
According to their website, the Military Fatherhood Award recognizes and lifts up as an example, a military dad who displays an ongoing commitment and dedication to his children, makes extraordinary efforts to father from a distance or while deployed, successfully balances military and family life, and makes an effort to mentor other military fathers and military children. All contestants submitted an essay about fatherhood and three participants were chosen as finalists.
?The three finalists are all very involved with their kids,? said Kelly, 38, from Dallas. ?They?re not just a provider, but are emotionally and intimately involved with their kids.?
The award winner will be decided by popular vote on NFI?s Facebook page starting April 23 and will continue until May 20.

Social media response to LA Times war photos
Thursday, April 19, 2012, 06:55 AM - News Stories Afghan war photos: social media response. In the wide-ranging discussion about The Times front-page story on U.S. soldiers posing with the body parts of Afghan bombers, readers zeroed in on the decision to publish the photos -- and whether publication would help ensure that alleged security shortcomings were not repeated, or whether publication could endanger troops. As Times Editor Davan Maharaj said in a live online discussion Wednesday: "The two photos published were chosen because they clearly and unambiguously depict conduct that the Army described as inappropriate."(LA Times)

Human atrocities now more visible because of social media. Over the past two weeks, social networks (specifically Twitter) have seen the explosive popularity of three crucial tags: #KONY2012, #STOPKONY and #invisiblechildren. But what do they mean? You probably know about the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, who founded a radical military group called the Lord?s Resistance Army (LRA). Since the LRA?s founding in 1987, Kony has ordered the abduction of about 20,000 children, according to data from the Notable Names Database (NNDB)...

Is It Time to Delete Facebook? When I opened my laptop the other day and started my traditional newsgathering, I came across a disturbing story. Marine sergeant Gary Stein posted anti-Obama sentiments on his Facebook page and is now facing an "other than honorable discharge" from the military. This case raises a lot of questions. Do military officials have the right to criticize his or her commander-in-chief? Does being in the military mean sacrificing your First Amendment right to freedom of speech? Should a marine sergeant receive an "other than honorable" discharge just for something he posted on Facebook?

Iran says its enemies have launched to bring down the Islamic establishment.? Facebook is very popular among Iranians, who have to access the site through anti-filtering tools...

Photo Mystery Solved, Then Doubted, Then Deciphered, Thanks To Readers. Remember when I declared a history mystery solved? Turns out I was wrong. Thanks to many Civil War buffs who commented on the story, we recognized a critical error.? It's not T.A. It's A.T.? The photo of the mystery soldier is a tintype, a direct positive of the scene, which produces laterally reversed images. The process produces mirror images of what they actually are ? like belts, hats and, of course, initials. (The Library of Congress has a good explanation of this.)

Website helps vets share military stories. There?s probably no story more gripping than one told by a veteran of the armed forces. The amazing sights witnessed and heroic actions of those who served are by their nature extraordinary. Michael Morgan, owner of Shoal Creek Designs of Litchfield, helped organize and create mymilitaryhero.us, a site where veterans can submit their stories for the world to read...

How journalists are trained for hostile areas
Friday, April 13, 2012, 03:25 AM - News Stories How journalists train to stay safe while covering hostile environments. Before he ever stepped foot in Iraq, Washington Post reporter Ed O?Keefe had already navigated his way through landmines, used a tourniquet to help an injured person, and been ambushed. He did all this and more in a hostile environment training course that he took prior to a six-and-a-half week reporting stint in Iraq. Great new mil-site. Having military and defense Web sites for a news group is apparently all the rage now. AOL has their Defense site, so does every newspaper worth their salt (see, the Journal Star is on the bleeding edge). So I just found this, Business Insider has a very cool milblog which has a great mix of personal touches and defense news. For instance, today, I found a link to a story about Fifth Generation Fighters like the F-35 and the Russion T-50 and also this map which will help you if there is a zombie outbreak. Also, the guy who is behind the mil-blog "This Ain't Hell", Jonn Lilyea, is contributing to the site, which, to me, adds all kinds of flavor that only a grunt would know...

Marine facing discharge over criticism of President Barack Obama on a Facebook page he administers will fight in military and civilian courts, his attorney said Tuesday. A military board recommended last week that Sgt. Gary Stein be given an other-than-honorable discharge on grounds that he violated "good order and discipline" by calling Obama a liar and suggesting he would not follow some orders issued by the president, among other comments posted to his Armed Forces Tea Party Facebook page. The board found he also violated rules limiting political conduct by service members. "This is not just a First Amendment case," attorney Gary Kreep said on CNN Tuesday...

Updating your status? State-sponsored cyber spies want to know it too, researchers say. Your Facebook profile is a ?treasure-trove? for state-sponsored hackers looking to gather intelligence about U.S. troop locations and organizational hierarchies, according to the cybersecurity firm Imperva. A new report from the California-based firm says hackers can analyze connections between ?friended? business partners and colleagues, to map out the hierarchy of different organization, reports Nextgov. ?The organizational structure can be used for corporate espionage, foreign-government and even military intelligence,? a draft reportedly states...

Anti-Obama Marine: Discharge decision based on 'personal opinion' not law. Marine Sgt. Gary Stein, who is facing dismissal for posting critical comments about President Obama on Facebook, accused the review board that recommended he be discharged of basing its decision on "personal opinion" Tuesday. "I believe it was more based on personal opinion on the three members than it was based on the legalities on the case. They denied four expert witnesses that were there to talk about the legalities. They didn't even want to hear or take written testimony from them," said Stein on CNN's "Starting Point" Tuesday morning...

Veteran blogger, others raise doubt about night raid security with Afghans in charge. While a weekend U.S.-Afghan agreement that will allow Afghan forces to head up all Special Operations night raid missions has been heralded by most as a step toward Afghan independence, the move is raising key objections by a few. The deal, brokered Sunday, would allow Afghan judges more authority to oversee the raids and limit the power to search houses to Afghan troops. It also limits the ability of U.S. forces to interrogate detainees and gives approval power and review for all U.S. ?special operations? in the country to an Afghan military panel. In a statement released by International Security Assistance Force, the U.S. Forces Afghanistan commander, Marine Gen. John Allen, lauded the agreement...

Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 03:52 AM - News Stories Best in Show: Armed Forces on Social Media. It was only a few years ago that the U.S. Marine Corps banned social media sites from its network, including Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook, citing high risk for malicious actors and content. The ban was reversed less than a year later--in time to welcome the new Department of Defense social media hub for its military branches.? Today, the U.S. Marine Corps maintains a Facebook page with the most Fans of any military branch, as shown by data from OhMyGov. Overall, the U.S. Military maintains some of the most active and engaging social media accounts in the federal government, as reflected by OhMyGov Analytics, and perhaps all of corporate America, according to business and technology consultant, Shel Holtz...(OhMyGov!)

Social media "celeb-ing" became widely known after Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and Kristin Cavallari accepted requests to go to military dances last year. As this year's prom season rapidly approaches, it's really taking off. The rise of Twitter and Facebook make people "feel completely entitled" to just ask a celebrity to be their date, says Christine Monnier, professor of sociology at the College of DuPage...

State-sponsored cyber spies want your Facebook status, researchers say. Facebook frequently takes flack for privacy invasions, but the next controversial byproduct of the social network may be cyber espionage, according to security researchers. Status updates on Facebook posted by friends and family of government officials or the officials' own unencrypted Facebook activities can be used to gather intelligence such as U.S. troop movements, says Rob Rachwald, security strategy director for cybersecurity firm Imperva. While data brokers profit by collating social communications for advertisers, spies and hackers on government payrolls can profit by parsing the same information. And there's a lot of it...

BEIRUT: Al-Jadeed TV cameraman Ali Shaaban was killed Monday at a border crossing in the area of Wadi Khaled, north Lebanon, security sources said. Al-Jadeed blamed the Syrian army for the incident. The TV crew was reporting from Khat Naft in the Wadi Khaled area when their vehicle was shot at as it neared the Syrian border town of Armouta, the sources added. Shaaban, a 32-year-old assistant cameraman, was shot in the chest and transferred to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose Twitter account was flooded with messages from people asking the government for immediate action, said he would ask the Syrian government to investigate the shooting and hold the attackers accountable...

Syrian tank satellite images posted to Facebook
Sunday, April 8, 2012, 04:57 AM - News Stories US envoy to Syria reveals Assad's tanks on Facebook. The United States released satellite images on Friday that it said showed Syria has artillery poised to hit residential areas and has moved some forces from one town to another despite calls for a withdrawal. Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, posted the commercial satellite images on Facebook in what seemed an effort to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to pull back forces as called for in a peace plan devised by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Annan is trying to end more than a year of violence in which Assad's forces have sought to crush pro-democracy demonstrations across Syria...(MSNBC)
Marines seek DOD guidance on social media use. Marine Corps officials are seeking additional guidance from the Pentagon regarding service members' use of social media amid discharge proceedings against a Camp Pendleton sergeant who criticized President Barack Obama on Facebook. Joe Kasper, spokesman for Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., said Friday that Hunter's office was notified of the plans in a letter from a Marine Corps major general. Hunter had urged authorities to withdraw discharge proceedings against Sgt. Gary Stein because he said the Pentagon's policy limiting service members' free is ambiguous about the use of social media...

Should Members of Military Be Free to Publicly Rap Civilian Leaders? The U.S. military has limited the free speech of troops since the Civil War, including not being allowed to criticize civilian leaders like the president.? So it's no wonder that Marine Sgt. Gary Stein is facing an other-than-honorable discharge for bashing Barack Obama on his Tea Party Facebook page. Should these First Amendment restrictions apply in this era of social media?
