How To Make Money In The Stock Market | Avid Investor Group

?

?

Making money from stocks is a big aspiration for many people. But only a small handful of people reach their investment goals. What are these people doing that you don?t do?

I am glad you asked.

To make money from stocks there are a few things you need to know and do?

1. Invest in multiple stocks

One of the most important things to remember as a stock trader is that you want to diversify your portfolio. In other words, you want to invest in multiple stocks and spread your investment across numerous industries, sectors and countries.

Why do you want to spread your investment across multiple stocks?

The purpose of diversifying your portfolio is to limit your risk. If you invest in only one company, you are very dependent on that company. However, if you invest in many companies, it does not really matter if one of those companies go bankrupt. You still hold other positions.

The best way to minimize your risk is to invest in minimum 1o different stocks.

2. Make an investment plan

If you don?t have a plan, there is a great chance that you will fail. It doesn?t matter whether you are investing in the stock market, the Forex market or the commodity market. But why is a stock trading plan so important?

The answer is that your plan works as your route map. It tells you how to get from there you are to where you want to be. It is not enough to know where you want to go, you must also know how to get where. And this is exactly what your stock trading plan does.

Also, with an investment plan in your hands, you are more likely to make rational decisions. You have to follow a plan and cannot buy a stock because you guess it would be a great investment. No, you can only buy a stock because your plan tells you to.

What should you include in your plan?

Hmm? that is a great question. You can include almost anything in your plan. But there are a few things that your investment plan must contain. First of all, you must write out a plan for when to enter and exit the market. Secondly, you must have a specific plan for when to select stocks. And thirdly, you must have a plan for how to manage risk. The last point is the most important aspect of your plan. If you dont know how to manage risk, you are doomed to fail. On the other hand, if you have a risk management plan, it is very likely that you will make money in the stock market or at least not losing all your money.

3. Educate yourself in the arena of stock trading

No matter what you want to master, it is always a great to study it. You can find tons of books, courses and seminars that can teach all you need to know. There are also a lot of websites about stock trading that offers free information.

There is a lot of great material out there. But there is also a lot of material that promises everything, but delivers nothing. If you want to get started in the stock market, you should begin with ?How to make money in stocks: A winning system in good times and bad?. This book is written by William O?Neil who is the founder of Investors? Business daily. In this popular book he outlines a very simple system that gives you the power to select the most promising stocks. He also gives you advice on when to buy and sell stocks.

Okay, I think that is it. Follow the three rules above and you are almost guaranteed to succeed. Stock trading and investing dosent have to be difficult. You should just know what to do and how to do it.

(AP) ? Chris Paul begged coach Vinny Del Negro to put him back into the game for the fourth quarter and not give up despite being down 21 points.

The result was another Clippers comeback ? one of the greatest in NBA playoff history.

Paul hit a pair of free throws with 23.7 seconds left, and the Clippers rallied from a deficit that had been as much as 27 to stun the Memphis Grizzlies 99-98 Sunday night in the opening game of their Western Conference series.

The key, Paul said, is to keep believing.

"Unfortunately, that's how we play," he said. "We get killed in the first three quarters and in the fourth quarter we like to try to stand up for ourselves, and we found a way to win tonight."

The Clippers tied the NBA playoff record for largest deficit overcome at the end of three quarters, when they trailed by 21.

"I don't think I've been part of a game like that ever," Clippers forward Blake Griffin said. "It was unbelievable."

Rudy Gay missed a 15-footer with 0.9 seconds left after the Grizzlies squandered a lead they held for the first 47 minutes, with a 24-point cushion disappearing in about nine minutes.

"Obviously, we gave it away, and everybody's kind of down," Gay said. "We're still into it. It's a long series, and we're ready to fight. That's all this means. We've got to fight hard."

The Clippers lost Caron Butler to a broken left hand, and he said he thinks he caught his hand in Gay's jersey on a screen. Del Negro said other players will have to step up.

Nick Young did just that, scoring 19 points off the bench with three 3-pointers in the midst of the Clippers' 26-1 run. Paul finished with 14 points while playing a team-high 38 minutes despite a groin injury that kept him out of the regular season finale against the Knicks. Griffin had 17 and Butler 12 before leaving the game.

Young said he didn't even see the score, being on the court down the stretch for a change. He said he looked up late and saw they had a game when he started hitting his shots.

"It's crazy. It's a blessing," Young said. "It shows how hard we fought. How we rallied together as a team, and just made stops down the end."

Gay finished with 19 for Memphis. Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo had 17, and Marc Gasol scored 14.

Game 2 is Wednesday night.

The Clippers outscored the Grizzlies 35-13 in the fourth quarter, the most points in the final period by a Memphis opponent this season. Los Angeles also hit 13 of 17 from the floor, including 5 of 6 beyond the arc after hitting only one the first three quarters.

The Grizzlies looked ready to roll as they ran out to a 20-point lead in the first quarter and were up by 27 twice in the third, the last on a pair of free throws by Mayo with 1:34 left.

The Clippers finally got going in the fourth, as the Grizzlies looked like they shut it down way too soon. They had five turnovers in the fourth. Even though the Clippers had seven themselves, the Grizzlies looked lost as they just lost the ball going into the lane or put up shots that had no chance of going in.

"We just got careless," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "We just lost a little bit of our discipline from a defensive perspective. But offensively, we just started walking it up and trying to throw it into the post instead of running it in. We ran earlier. We attacked. We were in transition earlier. We just stopped doing that and got conservative and it cost us."

Reggie Evans gave the Clippers their first lead at 97-96 when he scored inside with 58 seconds left.

Gay answered with 28 seconds to go with a 10-foot jumper on the right baseline over Paul, ending a drought where the Grizzlies went nearly 9 minutes without a field goal.

Tony Allen fouled Paul, sending him to the line for the clinching free throws.

Boston came back from 21 down after three quarters against New Jersey on May 25, 2002.

The Grizzlies had won six straight overall and the last 11 on their home floor to grab the No. 4 seed and start this series at home. Mayo said there would be no sleep until they fix what went wrong.

"We turned something that we worked so hard for ? home-court advantage ? to an ugly loss in Game 1," Mayo said. "We've got to come back Game 2 with the attitude we can't quit."

The Grizzlies seemed to be clicking all across the board. They even hit 11 of 16 from 3-point range after ranking 25th in the NBA this season beyond the arc at 34.5 percent. Against the Clippers, they opened by hitting their four. So did Conley, and he hit three straight, the last with 7:19 left in the third, putting the Grizzlies up 69-48.

Memphis fans couldn't have been more ready for this chance to start the postseason at home with a sellout crowd on hand. With a good luck charm in a St. Jude patient singing the national anthem, fans had their free T-shirts on and waving the free towels before tipoff.

The Grizzlies were ready too. They opened the game hitting their first five shots and seven of the first 10 in jumping out 15-6, forcing Del Negro to take a timeout. They quickly led by as much as 20 and had a 34-16 lead by the end of the first quarter, tying the most points scored this season in that period.

This is the Clippers' first trip to the postseason since 2006. Paul has plenty of playoff experience with 23 games while in New Orleans, but this was the postseason debut for three starters ? Griffin, Randy Foye and DeAndre Jordan ? along with four of their teammates.

Paul looked a little rusty in the first half with only one point and three assists, all in the first quarter. He sat out the Clippers' final game of the season with a strained groin, and Los Angeles lost that game to the Knicks along with the chance to start this series at home. Paul picked up his third foul with 6.5 seconds left in the first half.

The Clippers made a run in the second quarter and got within 50-39. But after Gay missed a pull-up jumper, the Clippers had a shot clock violation. The Grizzlies scored the final eight points, the last on a dunk by Gasol just before the buzzer for a 58-39 halftime lead.

Notes: The Grizzlies scored 34 in a quarter three other times. ... The Grizzlies went 17-1 when leading after the first and 16-1 when leading at halftime. The lone loss came in double overtime March 13 to the Lakers. ... The Grizzlies made nine 3-pointers twice during the season, the last on April 3 against Golden State.

Dollar hits two-month low as U.S. economic momentum slows

LONDON (Reuters) - The dollar fell to a two-month low against a basket of currencies on Monday, weighed down after modest first quarter growth in the U.S. economy kept alive chances of further monetary easing by the Federal Reserve.

The dollar is likely to come under more pressure if data, including U.S. jobs numbers, this week disappoints. U.S. growth cooled in the first quarter partly due to businesses cutting back on investments, reinforcing the central bank's contention that interest rates should be kept near zero through 2014.

The slowdown fuelled speculation that the Fed may eventually launch another bond buying program, or a third round of quantitative easing. That would likely have a negative effect on the dollar while giving riskier assets like stocks, commodities and higher-yielding currencies like the Australian dollar a boost.

The greenback's woes even supported the euro despite prospects of a prolonged slowdown in the euro zone as severe austerity measures take a toll on economic activity across the region.

Spain slipped back into recession as gross domestic product shrank 0.3 percent in the January to March quarter, data showed on Monday.

"The dollar is under pressure but the euro is by no means out of the woods and the Spanish GDP data is a pointer," said Peter Kinsella, currency strategist at Commerzbank, London.

"Besides, liquidity in the markets is a bit thin because of holidays this week and this can make price movements a bit exaggerated."

Markets in most of Europe will be shut on Tuesday for the May Day holiday while Japan celebrates Golden Week holidays, keeping trading on foreign exchange markets a bit subdued.

Against its basket of currencies, the dollar <.dxy>, fell to 78.638, its lowest level since March 1.

Against the yen, the dollar dropped to 80.08 at one point on trading platform EBS, its lowest level since late February, and last stood at 80.14 yen, down 0.2 percent from late U.S. trade on Friday.

The euro was flat against the dollar at $1.3250, not far from a near one-month high of $1.32706 struck on Friday with traders citing buy stops above $1.3270, a break of which could see it rise to $1.33. But any bounce to around those levels could see more selling by bearish investors.

The common currency was down 0.3 percent against the yen, dropping to 106.09 yen and hovering close to two-week lows. Investors expect the yen to benefit from safe haven demand stemming from the euro zone's debt problems.

Business confidence in the region weakened sharply in April and the ECB could scale back its economic outlook at its policy meeting on Thursday. As such, the rising probability of further easing by the European Central Bank in coming months could weigh on the euro.

EYES ON U.S. DATA

The dollar is likely to take cues later this week from a batch of U.S. economic data, including the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) gauges of the manufacturing and services sectors, as well as jobs numbers.

Both will be fresh pointers to U.S. economic momentum which has shown signs of flagging, suggesting the Fed may consider easing monetary policy further in June.

"Clearly if we do get a weak ISM and a 125,000 (increase in payrolls), this dollar weakness is going to continue," said Rob Ryan, Singapore-based FX strategist for BNP Paribas, whose economists are predicting an additional 125,000 U.S. jobs in April.

Average market expectations are for a rise of 170,000.

Market players said the dollar may fall further against the yen in the near term given a drop in U.S. Treasury yields. The dollar/yen exchange rate has a tight relationship with the spreads between yields on U.S. Treasuries and Japanese government bonds.

On Friday, the 10-year Treasury yield dipped to as low as 1.884 percent, its lowest level in nearly three months.

Other factors that suggest the dollar may stay under pressure against the yen include the existence of sizeable bearish positions in the yen, a lack of interest in foreign bond investment among Japanese investors, and the low probability of yen-selling intervention, traders said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Since the days of Mark Twain, the San Francisco Bar Pilots have had it good.

Thanks to outsized political clout and highly specialized training, this elite cadre, currently numbering 56 ship captains, has enjoyed monopoly control over the San Francisco Bay since 1850. State law requires a bar pilot to guide every large vessel ? be it a luxury liner, a billionaire's yacht, aircraft carrier or cargo ship ? in, out and around the San Francisco Bay. Most of the ships are docked at the Port of Oakland.

For decades the pilots plied the Northern California waters with almost no public scrutiny. That's because they did so largely without major incidents and at no cost to taxpayers. Their salaries and benefits are set by an obscure state commission and paid entirely by ship owners. The state Legislature is tasked with approving the salaries, and routinely gaveled home raises over the years for the pilots with little push back. It helped that the pilots, through their association, contributed more than $100,000 to mostly Democratic candidates and causes every two-year state election cycle.

The annual income of the 55 men and one woman who proudly call themselves San Francisco bar pilots has risen from about $150,000 in 1990 to $451,336 last year for a job one pilot argued in a court fight with the Internal Revenue Service amounts to part-time work ? seven days "on" and seven days "off" duty. They fly business class to France every five years for mandatory training and enjoy a pension that is fully funded by ship owners and requires no contributions from them.

Then on the foggy morning in November 2007, one of the bar pilots slammed the cargo ship Cosco Busan into the San Francisco Bay Bridge, touching off a massive oil spill that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to clean and brought the pilots and the commission that oversees them a load of scrutiny.

Now, the mariners are running into political turbulence in Sacramento after decades of smooth sailing in the capital. Shipping companies, farmers, state Chamber of Commerce representatives and others are exploiting the new-found political vulnerability to successfully oppose pilot requests for raises while demanding more legislative oversight.

The Board of Pilot Commissioners for the Bays of San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun ? which licenses and oversees the pilots ? operated with virtually no oversight from lawmakers, according to a state audit prompted by the 2007 disaster and released in 2009.

The Legislature in 2009 placed the commission under the authority of the Business, Transportation, and Housing Agency and its entire membership and executive director were replaced. Two bar pilots, two representatives from the shipping industry and three public members now comprise the board.

The latest political setback happened Monday when the Assembly transportation committee tabled a pilot-backed bill that would have required owners of ships larger than about 1,150 feet to pay the equivalent of 150 percent of the typical fee to add a second pilot to help guide the large vessel to dock.

"We don't believe it is fair to increase the salaries of people making $451,000 a year at the expense of farmers and Californians trying to feed their families," Crystal Jack, a lobbyist representing the California Grocers Association and several large state agricultural interests, said at the outset of the hearing. Several legislators were clearly concerned with raising the pilot's level of compensation and sent the bill back for more negotiations.

Both sides agree that two pilots should man the biggest vessels. But the ship owners say the pilots are paid by the size of the ship and already receive higher fees for handling the larger vessels. The pilots said the fees aren't enough to compensate for the work done by the second pilot.

One pending bill could put tighter controls on the commission or even eliminate the panel, 172 years after the Legislature's third-ever act created it to bring order to the chaotic bay during the California Gold Rush.

"They have been around so long that no one knows what they do until something happens," said Assemblywoman Alyson Huber, a Democrat from Lodi, who introduced a "sunset" bill that could put the board out of business unless the Legislature acts to keep it alive. Huber said she believes the board plays a vital role in keeping Northern California waterways safe by having pilots take control of large ships from captains unfamiliar with the treacherous currents, weather and geography of the San Francisco Bay. But she said her bill is necessary to ensure the commission receives proper oversight.

Huber and shippers' representative Mike Jacob deny the pilots' charges that they are attempting to do away with the commission or San Francisco bar pilots, named so because of the dredged bar they must cross to get large vessels to port.

Capt. Bruce Horton, the top pilot and "port agent," said he believes much of the negative attention is being driven by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association in an effort to reduce the fees paid by ship owners, which amounted to $50 million last year. Horton said he believes the Huber bill, backed by the shippers' lobbyist, is designed to replace them with less expensive pilots licensed by the federal government.

"For the shippers, it's about the bottom line," Horton said Wednesday aboard one of the pilots' utility boats, which ferries the captains from the bay-front station house on San Francisco's Pier 9, the heart of the city's waterfront, to ships at anchor in the bay and to another pilot boat anchored 11-miles outside the Golden Gate Bridge. There the bar pilots board incoming ships by jumping onto a rope ladder and scurrying up the vessel's side, one of the most dangerous aspects of the job.

Horton said the average age of the pilots is 52 and each has worked about 11 years in sailing before becoming a bar pilot. They also undergo intensive training that finishes with a test that requires the applicants to fill in aquatic landmarks, buoys and other significant parts of the bay from memory. He said the generous compensation is needed to attract the top captains to a congested waterway beset with high winds, changing currents and fog.

"We are well compensated because we are at the acme of our profession," Horton said. "This is not an entry level job."

French government says French journalist kidnapped

(AP) ? France's Foreign Ministry says that a French journalist who disappeared in Colombia was kidnapped during a clash between government forces and rebels.

The ministry cites Foreign Minister Alain Juppe as saying that Romeo Langlois "was kidnapped during a clash between Colombian troops and the FARC."

The ministry gave no details about who was holding Langlois or where.

Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal says the French government remains very prudent in all kidnapping cases to protect the safety of the hostages.

Romeo Langlois had been accompanying troops on a counterdrug mission in the Caqueta state. He went missing Saturday after combat with leftist rebels that killed three soldiers and a police officer.

What Ever Happened to Compromise?

Editor?s note: Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson will discuss compromise and Congressional gridlock at the National Constitution Center in a conversation with Andrea Mitchell on May 2. A live webcast of the program begins at 6:30 p.m. EST.

The Spirit of CompromiseIs compromise a dirty word? Speaker John Boehner spoke for many politicians running for office when he declared ?I reject the word.? In the past, political leaders in the midst of election campaigns could declare their intent never to back down?and then once in office turn their attention to the give-and-take that is a necessary part of effective governance.

But something has changed over the past several decades. We?ve entered a new era of the permanent campaign, where every day is effectively election day. Classic compromise?where all sides sacrifice something in order to improve on the status quo from their perspective?has become harder to conceive, let alone to achieve. There is no easy way out of this predicament?in part because the tension between campaigning and governing is built into the democratic process itself.

What better place to start this conversation than in Philadelphia, the birthplace of one of the greatest compromises in U.S. history?the U.S. Constitution. As a start, let?s clear away some key misconceptions about compromise.

Politicians don?t compromise because voters don?t want them to

Most Americans say they want politicians to stick to their principles. Yet they also say they want politicians who are willing to compromise to get things done, and they strongly disapprove when politicians?even those whose principles they support?refuse to compromise to head off a crisis. Faced with the risk of government debt default last summer, even a majority of Tea Party supporters (the group typically most opposed to compromise, according to surveys) said that they would support a compromise that included tax increases as well as spending cuts.

Compromise is not possible unless the system is reformed

Politicians and pundits who recognize the need for compromise all have their favorite reforms they say will fix the problem. Nonpartisan redistricting, publicly funded campaigns, open primaries, ending the filibuster?the list goes on. Without major institutional change, they assert, polarized politics will persist and political intransigence will prevail.

Certainly some of these reforms could help promote compromise by diminishing the power of extremes in favor of the political center. But it is a mistake to suppose that we have to wait for reforms before we can have compromises: reforming the system itself requires compromise.

Just win big?then you won?t need to compromise

Ira Gershwin had it half right?it?s nice work if you can get it. But in our system you can?t get it no matter how hard you try. The idea that either party will gain complete control and push through its agenda, undiluted, is a fantasy. Consider how unlikely it is that one party could totally dominate long enough. Even if a party could win that big, it would still be faced with making compromises within its own ranks, as President Obama found during the long, slow, and acrimonious passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010.

To compromise you have to find common ground

In a true compromise, everyone?s ox gets gored. Compromise requires all sides to give up something they value, and all think they could have gotten more if the other side had not been so stubborn. Yet compared to stalemate or capitulation, compromise has the virtue of giving all sides more of what they want. That?s the very nature of compromise: no gain without some pain.

The Tax Reform Act of 1986, the most comprehensive tax reform bill in modern American history, saw both President Reagan and House Speaker O?Neill recognize that in order to make gains over the status quo, each would have to give up something of value. They did not have the luxury of hoping for the pure win-win solutions that some negotiation theorists promise. They just had to compromise.

It?s always wrong to compromise your principles

Strong principles matter, in part because they can help us evaluate whether a proposal is pointing in the right direction. But ?never compromise your principles? turns those useful filters into roadblocks, capable of stopping a political compromise dead in its tracks, rather than serving as guideposts, meant to draw attention to critical values at issue.

If the universal healthcare coverage that was the goal of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 was a principle that could not be compromised, no policy covering anything less than the entire U.S. population would have been acceptable. In the end, supporters settled for a healthcare system reform in which more but not all are covered. Most important compromises touch on profound issues of principle and require all participants to give in in some way. That?s what makes compromise so hard?and so necessary.

Amy Gutmann is the President of the University of Pennsylvania. Dennis Thompson is a Professor of Government at Harvard University. They are co-authors of The Spirit of Compromise. This essay originally appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on April 29, 2012.

Big 10 Championship Game - Wisconsin v Michigan StateGetty Images

Heading into the NFL draft, Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins thought he?d be chosen by a team that envisioned him as a future starter after a couple years as an apprentice to a thirtysomething veteran. Instead, Cousins was chosen in the fourth round by the Redskins, where he?ll back up No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III ? who?s a year and a half younger than him. That?s not what Cousins had in mind.

Cousins said on the Dan Patrick Show that he figured he?d go to the Broncos or Eagles as a backup to Peyton Manning or Michael Vick, and that one of those teams would groom him as its starter of the future. Cousins reiterated that he?s surprised to be a Redskin and didn?t expect them to take him.

?I was shocked, knowing what they had done with the No. 2 pick, and I hadn?t talked to them that much in the process,? Cousins said of the Redskins taking him. ?I would have said probably Denver or Philadelphia, in terms of teams that had shown interest and were looking for a quarterback.?

It would be hard to blame Cousins if he?s disappointed to be with the Redskins. In Denver or Philadelphia, Cousins could have learned from Manning or Vick and eventually taken over from them. In Washington, Cousins can only become the starter if Griffin is injured or a major disappointment. Still, Cousins is trying to put a happy face on the situation.

?I still have an opportunity to learn from a nine-year veteran like Rex Grossman,? Cousins said. ?I?ll be the first one to say it was a surprising pick to me as well, but coach Shanahan was there in San Francisco with Joe Montana and Steve Young, so he?s not new to this. . . . I know my opportunity is going to come sooner or later.?

Cousins? opportunity may come, but probably not with the team that drafted him.

Designer Louboutin hits back in red sole lawsuit

LONDON (AP) ? Would a red-soled stiletto by any other name than Christian Louboutin look as sweet?

Certainly not for the luxury French shoe designer, who passionately defended his court battle to protect his famous glossy red-soled shoes Monday.

Louboutin was in London to open a museum exhibition marking his brand's 20th anniversary, talking to reporters about his inspirations and his rise to global success. But he also hit out at fellow French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent and its parent company PPR, whom he is suing for trademark infringement in a U.S. federal appeals court. A panel of judges has yet to issue a decision.

"What PPR does via Yves Saint Laurent is breaking my trademark, which I find incredibly offensive," Louboutin told The Associated Press.

Louboutin's lawyers have compared his shoe trademark to a similar one held by Tiffany & Co. for blue boxes ? sparking a wider debate on whether a designer can own a color.

The 49-year-old designer, dressed in a red tweed jacket, jeans and steel-toed leather shoes he designed himself, argued that his rivals are wrong to accuse him of trying to monopolize the color red.

"I do not own a color. I own a specific color in a specific place," he said of his distinctive soles.

A lower U.S. court had rejected a request by Louboutin to stop the sale of YSL shoes that are red all over, including the soles.

Louboutin shoes are one of the world's most recognizable fashion items, and have been worn by celebrities from Angelina Jolie to French first lady Carla Bruni. The most popular style is 5 inches high, and his exhibition includes many theatrical boots and shoes with even higher heels.

"Shoes are objects of pleasure," Louboutin said ? though his high heels are famously uncomfortable to wear.

Low heels can sometimes be attractive, he said, but comfort is clearly not one of his priorities.

"I am not against comfort, but I don't like the idea that my shoes are evocative of comfort," he said.

But he wouldn't go so far as to endorse foot surgery ? nicknamed "Loub-jobs" after his shoes ? that aims to ease the pain of wearing high heels.

"Frankly, it's probably not a good idea," he said.

The retrospective exhibition at London's Design Museum traces Louboutin's rise from a teenager fascinated by the feathered costumes of Paris's cabaret showgirls to his stints at YSL and Chanel to setting up his first boutique in 1991. It also gives a glimpse into his creative process from sketch to execution, as well as including creations designed for a 2008 exhibition with director David Lynch which examines shoes as fetish objects.

Louboutin considers Kate Moss to be his English style icon, but said Queen Elizabeth II would be an interesting and challenging customer.

"She's a woman, she's a queen, she's a full concept," he said. "She is such a symbol."

The retrospective show runs from Tuesday to July 9.

China activists lifted by blind lawyer's escape

BEIJING (AP) ? The surprising escape of a blind legal activist from house arrest to the presumed custody of U.S. diplomats is buoying China's embattled dissident community even as the government lashes out, detaining those who helped him and squelching mention of his name on the Internet.

The flight of Chen Guangcheng, a campaigner for disabled rights and against coercive family planning, is a challenge for China's authoritarian government and, if it's confirmed he is in U.S. custody, for Washington too. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell began a hurried mission to Beijing on Sunday to smooth the way for annual talks involving his boss, Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and scores of officials.

Though Chen ? a self-taught legal activist described by friends and supporters as calm and charismatic ? hardly seems a threat, security forces and officials have reacted angrily, detaining several of his supporters and a nephew who fought with officials after the escape was discovered is on the run.

Among those still in custody are He Peirong, a Nanjing activist and Chen supporter who drove the blind lawyer's getaway car out of his home province of Shandong, and Guo Yushan, a Beijing scholar and rights advocate who hosted and aided Chen in the capital.

Prominent Beijing-based rights activist Hu Jia, who evaded his own government minders to meet with Chen in Beijing earlier this week and posted photos of the reunion online, was taken in for questioning and held for 24 hours, returning home Sunday.

Hu's activist wife, Zeng Jinyan, was questioned for half an hour in her home by state security officers who, she said, were "very unhappy" about Chen's flight.

"They were really irritated," Zeng said. "It was a big shock for them."

Activists, journalists, diplomats and even British actor Christian Bale have tried to penetrate the heavy security that has surrounded Chen for the last 18 months, all without success. Each time, hired guards drove them back, sometimes pelting outsiders with rocks and chasing them with cars.

For China's human rights defenders, Chen's successful dash to freedom was as welcome as it was unlikely.

Ai Xiaoming, a documentary film maker based in south China's Guangzhou city, said Chen's escape has had the biggest emotional impact on Chinese rights advocates since jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize two years ago.

"There are many people now drinking toasts to him for the way he broke through his captivity, his difficulties, and pursued freedom," said Ai. "It's what we all want for ourselves in our hearts. Chen Guangcheng is an example to us. If a blind person can break out of the darkness to freedom, then everyone can."

Ai said Chen's hardships have been unique but his aspirations for a more open society with greater legal protections are shared by many.

"We have jails inside ourselves that make us worry that we will be punished if we speak our minds because this society doesn't respect the rule of law and doesn't fully protect freedom of speech," she said. "Chen Guangcheng is a model, and he has shown us that we can break away from those fears."

China's state-controlled media have so far ignored the story despite its gripping narrative and the serious implications it could have on Sino-U.S. relations. Anything vaguely related to Chen has been blocked on Chinese social media sites, including posts including or key word searches for Chen, Guangcheng, GC, or even the words "blind person."

The media blackout and online controls haven't prevented China's Internet savvy activist community from learning about or celebrating Chen's escape. Overseas sites like Twitter were being used to share updates, including photos of a smiling Chen in his trademark black sunglasses reuniting with the activist couple, Hu and Zeng.

Also circulating is a video Chen recorded as a direct address to Premier Wen Jiabao, condemning the treatment of him and his family and accusing local Communist Party officials by name. Activists sent the video to the overseas Chinese news site Boxun.com, which posted part of it on YouTube, which is blocked in China but can be accessed with a proxy server.

Chen's whereabouts have yet to be confirmed though ChinaAid, a Texas-based activist group that has been promoting Chen's case, said Saturday Chen was "under U.S. protection" and that Beijing and Washington were discussing the situation.

Hu, the Beijing activist, said he was told Chen had made it to "a 100 percent safe place," which he understood to mean the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

Chen's escape comes as the Chinese leadership is already reeling, trying to heal divisions over the ousting of a powerful politician, Bo Xilai, and complete a once-a-decade transition to a new generation of leaders. As in Chen's case, the U.S. is implicated: Bo's ouster was precipitated by the sudden flight of an aide to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu.

While the aide, Wang Lijun, gave himself up to Chinese authorities ? and though Republicans have criticized President Barack Obama for letting a valuable intelligence asset go ? the incident and Chen's escape reaffirm longheld suspicions by Beijing that the U.S. wants to undermine the communist government. Late last week, the White House, in a reversal, said it was considering selling new warplanes to Taiwan ? the democratic island China claims as a breakaway territory.

It's not known what Chen's intentions are: some say he wants to stay in China. But negotiating any exit from U.S. custody is likely to be difficult for the Obama administration. The government is unlikely to make concessions, fearing they might embolden other activists.

Complicating any negotiations over Chen is the treatment of his family. While Chen escaped a week ago from Dongshigu village and made it 600 kilometers (370 miles) northwest to Beijing, his wife and 6-year-old daughter were left behind. The whereabouts of several other relatives, including Chen's mother and brother, are unknown.

Seven lawyers have volunteered to defend Chen's nephew, Chen Kegui, who allegedly confronted and stabbed local officials who stormed his house in the middle of the night on Thursday in apparent retribution for the activist's escape.

One of the volunteer lawyers, Liu Weiguo, said he spoke with Kegui briefly Sunday afternoon via mobile phone. Kegui told the lawyer he was by a highway about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from his home village, penniless and hoping to find a local police station where he could turn himself in.

"Since he escaped, they haven't punished his persecutors in Shandong," said Zeng, the Beijing activist. "Instead it's the activists and supporters who have been detained or disappeared. It's very clear that Chen's supporters and family members are very vulnerable right now."

Scientists uncover exciting lead into premature aging and heart disease

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered that they can dramatically increase the life span of mice with progeria (premature aging disease) and heart disease (caused by Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy) by reducing levels of a protein called SUN1. This research was done by A*STAR's Institute of Medical Biology (IMB) in collaboration with their partners at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States and the Institute of Cellular and System Medicine in Taiwan. Their findings were published in the scientific journal, Cell, on 27th April 2012 and provide an exciting lead into developing new methods to treat premature aging and heart disease.

Children with progeria suffer symptoms of premature aging and mostly die in their early teens from either heart attack or stroke. Individuals with Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (AD-EDMD) suffer from muscle wasting and cardiomyopathy, a type of heart disease that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle making it harder for the heart to pump blood and deliver it to the rest of the body leading to heart failure. Both diseases are caused by mutations in Lamin A, a protein in the membrane surrounding a cell's nucleus which provides mechanical support to the nucleus. SUN1 is a protein also found in the inner nuclear membrane, but there have been no previous studies to show how SUN1 interacts with the Lamin proteins.

The scientists wanted to investigate if SUN1 had any involvement in diseases caused by mutations in Lamin A, so they inactivated SUN1 in mouse models developed for progeria and AD-EDMD. These mouse models for progeria and AD-EDMD usually thrive poorly and have markedly short life spans as they die from premature aging and heart failure respectively. However, by inactivating SUN1 and reducing SUN1 levels in these mouse models, the scientists observed that the life spans of the mouse models for progeria and AD-EDMD doubled and tripled respectively.

"We actually expected that knocking out Sun1 in these mouse models would worsen their conditions and cause them to die faster but surprisingly we observed the opposite. This is the first time that Sun1 protein has been implicated in diseases linked to Lamin A and it is exciting how basic research has led to a discovery that can potentially have significant impact on us," said Rafidah Abdul Mutalif, who is pursuing her PhD at IMB and one of the main authors of this paper.

Prof. Colin Stewart, Principle Investigator at IMB, said, "Notably, the heart muscle of the mice was restored to near normal function and cardiac function improved when the levels of SUN1 were reduced. Mutations in Lamin A are frequently reported as a cause of heart disease and especially within a group of hereditary cardiomyopathies. This opens up a possibility that from these observations, reduction in SUN1 maybe of therapeutic use for other forms of heart disease. We are very excited about this discovery and look forward to further pursuing this lead which could potentially lead to development of new treatments for heart diseases."

Sabathia, A-Rod deliver for Yankees

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:19 p.m. ET April 29, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Yankees manager Joe Girardi was hoping CC Sabathia would give one of those performances that has made him one of the most dependable pitchers in baseball - his bullpen really needed a break.

The ace obliged.

Sabathia steadied New York's rocky rotation with eight sharp innings, Alex Rodriguez passed Willie Mays for eighth on the career RBIs list and the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Sunday despite leaving an astonishing 14 men on base in the first six innings.

"It just feels good to go out there and give those guys a rest," Sabathia said of a `pen that had thrown 73 1-3 innings entering the game, third most in the AL.

A-Rod drove in two runs for 1,904 RBIs without hitting the ball out of the infield. According to information provided by the Yankees from Elias, he is eighth in major league history.

He singled on a dribbler down the third base line with the bases loaded in the second, the Yankees' only hit in six plate appearances with three men on. Chris Stewart slid under catcher Gerald Laird's tag on Rodriguez's grounder to short in the seventh.

Curtis Granderson homered in the fourth inning - barely. He had to stop between second and third to look back after center fielder Austin Jackson nearly made a spectacular catch above the wall in right-center.

Granderson also walked with the bases loaded to force in the game's first run in the second, one of a career-high seven walks by Detroit starter Max Scherzer (1-3).

The Yankees walked nine times and left 15 on base overall, but won the three-game series. Detroit has lost eight of 10.

"We were really fortunate to have a shot in that game the way the game was going," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "In this ballpark, with a lineup like that, normally that doesn't happen. And it won't happen."

Andruw Jones homered in the eighth. He pinch ran for Nick Swisher in the third after the right fielder left with a tight left hamstring following a walk.

Swisher has a low grade strain and will be out several days. Giradi says it's not serious enough for a trip to the disabled list.

With New York's bullpen taxed by Freddy Garcia's horrid 1 2-3 innings start on Saturday, Manager Girardi said before the game, "I would love to get a good seven or eight strong innings out of CC."

Sabathia (3-0) came through. He gave up a double in the first then retired 10 in a row before Prince Fielder, his former teammate at Milwaukee, hit his first home run in the Bronx and third this year overall with two outs in the fourth.

The big lefty had little trouble with the Tigers - all except for Fielder and his nemesis Miguel Cabrera, who hit a long RBI double in the sixth inning to close it to 3-2. Cabrera is 10 for 19 against Sabathia.

Sabathia struggled early to a 5.27 ERA on a staff with a 6.37 ERA, 29th in majors, entering Sunday. Garcia was dropped from the rotation before Sunday's game and rookie David Phelps will get a start before the expected return of Andy Pettitte in mid-May.

But Sabathia was sharp this time, yielding four hits and striking out eight. He walked two.

"When you have your ace on the mound and you talk about trying to win all the series and you're tied 1-1 you feel pretty good going into that day," Girardi said..

Fielder homered to close the score to 2-1 before Granderson matched him in the bottom of the fourth.

With one out, Granderson connected but Jackson made a long run and leaped where the outfield wall meets a fence that separates fans from the New York bullpen in right-center. The former Yankees minor leaguer who was sent to Detroit in the trade for Granderson had the ball in his glove but momentum carried the glove into that fence, knocking the ball loose for Granderson's eighth homer.

"I didn't see what happened right away," Granderson said.

Despite all the walks and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings, Scherzer got away with allowing just three runs.

Luke Putkonen made his major league debut with the bases loaded and two outs in fifth. He got Granderson to ground out to second base then received a bunch of fist bumps when he returned to the dugout.

"To be honest with you, that was the last thing I wanted to do, but sometimes it doesn't want to work out the way you want to," Leyland said of bringing in Putkonen. "I was hoping (Scherzer) could get through the inning and I could start the kid in an inning."

Scherzer was pulled after throwing 119 pitches.

Putkonen gave up Rodriguez's fielder's choice RBI in the seventh. Collin Balester relieved and gave up a sacrifice fly to Robinson Cano. Putkonen walked two.

NOTES: The major league record for runners left on base is 20 for a nine-inning game, set by the Yankees in 1956. ... Jeter's two infield singles gave him 36 in April, topping the best April of his career, 35 in 2006. ... Tigers RHP Doug Fister (left side strain) will make a rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Toledo. ... Cabrera has hits in 31 of 33 games against Yankees. Brennan Boesch had two hits and has hits in 13 of 15 games against New York.

Police: Body found in Wash. mountain bunker

NORTH BEND, Wash. (AP) ? After a 22-hour standoff, police blew the top off a rugged mountain bunker near Seattle on Saturday, only to find their target ? a man believed to be a murder suspect who holed up there ? dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside.

Authorities had not positively identified the body as 41-year-old Peter Keller, who hadn't been seen since his wife and daughter were found shot to death last weekend, King County sheriff's Sgt. Katie Larson said.

A bomb squad cleared the bunker, built into a ridge in the Cascade Mountains, to make sure there were no booby-traps before detectives entered. Officers shouted warnings before blowing the roof, Larson said. Tear gas pumped into the bunker didn't work on Friday. With clear weather and a fresh SWAT team in place Saturday morning, it was time to act more aggressively, she said.

It wasn't clear if any officers had heard the gunshot from inside the bunker, she said.

The raid ended a tense week for law enforcement officials who tried to track down Keller, a gun enthusiast described by his family as having a "survivalist mentality." That Keller was likely armed and on the loose in an extremely popular hiking and mountain-biking area east of Seattle kept many people on edge.

"There's been a huge sigh of relief," Larson said. "Our people are out safe, and the trails are now safe for the community to use."

Keller had spent eight years building the bunker into the side of Rattlesnake Ridge, police said. It was thoroughly camouflaged and had multiple levels. Photos of the inside of the bunker, released by the King County Sheriff's Office, showed a shelf full of ammunition boxes stacked inside Ziploc bags.

SWAT teams spent a grueling seven hours on the mountainside Friday morning, virtually crawling over dangerously steep terrain slick with mud from recent rains, before they found the bunker. A number of officers were treated intravenously for dehydration, and one broke his ankle, said sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said.

After long shifts, the officers appeared exhausted, their faces smeared with camouflage paint, as they rode down the mountain in sport-utility vehicles or armored carriers to be replaced by fresher teams.

SWAT officers who kept watch on the bunker through Friday night said they saw lights going on and off, and they believed its occupant had everything necessary to remain inside for a long time ? including a generator, food, gas mask, bullet-resistant vest and many guns.

Photographs found in Keller's home after the killings gave authorities an idea of where it was; in one picture that they enhanced, detectives could make out buildings in nearby North Bend. Combined with reports from alert hikers who remembered seeing his faded red pickup truck at the Rattlesnake Ridge trailhead, the sheriff's office sent experienced trackers to the area, where they found off-trail boot prints confirming their belief that he was somewhere on the ridge.

They could smell smoke from its woodstove before they found it.

Authorities pumped tear gas into the structure Friday, but it failed to flush the occupant ? either because it didn't penetrate deep enough into the structure, or because the person had a gas mask.

Officers described the bunker as "amazingly fortified" and said the photos recovered from Keller's house don't do it justice, West said.

The bunker was found at about the 1,350-foot level, several hundred yards due east of a trailhead at Rattlesnake Ridge. It had several entryways and ladders.

Court documents described Keller as a loner who has a survivalist mentality and has been stockpiling supplies in the woods.

An arrest warrant issued Wednesday accuses him of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson; the home was set on fire after Keller's wife and daughter were shot.

The fire at Keller's home was stopped before the house burned down, and authorities said they found seven gasoline cans placed in different areas of the home.

The King County medical examiner has determined Kaylene Keller, 18, and her mother, Lynnettee Keller, 41, both died from gunshots to the head. Their bodies were found in their bedrooms.

Kaylene's boyfriend told detectives that Peter Keller had shown him his gun collection and several large-caliber rifles and handguns, court documents said. The boyfriend, who was not identified, said Kaylene had told him her father took long hikes on the weekends and was stockpiling supplies at a fort in the woods.

Peter Keller withdrew $6,200 from a bank last week and told one of his co-workers at a computer refurbishing store in Preston that he might not return, according to court documents.
